Week 1, Saturday Post-Trial - Sandalphon

[Ion's normally in bed rather early, curfew or otherwise, if for no other reason than his own lack of physical stamina. Tonight, however, he comes in pretty late, face lined with anguish. He deposits his shoes and his staff and his accessories and all but collapses onto his side of the bed. It's odd, coming from him, who always has something nice to say to great someone with, regardless of how he expects them to reciprocate. Silently, he grabs his pillow and presses it against his face, coiling toward his knees.

How hard does one have to wish to escape a cruel reality?]

[Sandalphon retires to their shared room following the trial's conclusion. He sits on his side of the bed and waits, be it for his partner or the next day.

Hours pass, and the latter has yet to come; Ion, however, returns just as Sandalphon considers leaving the room to look for him.]

Does today's trial trouble you?

[As of right now, that's not a word he would choose for Akechi.]

Worried?

[Sandalphon has no illusions about the situation in which Akechi has dug himself. It's ugly. People are angry, enough that they might pursue their own justice.]

Of course. That is his punishment; he said it himself.

That doesn't the change that he was complicit in a crime. [He pauses.] Not that there's proof, but he just about admitted it on his own. He was aware of the consequences from the beginning.

[The corners of his lips curl up faintly.]

A fool wouldn't feel disappointment in the path he chose. That's your compassion speaking.

[Sandalphon gives a quick glance to the side in thought. He doesn't take much time to formulate his response.]

It was another trial. The culprits were discovered and will receive their due punishment, starting tomorrow. What is there to think?

[His features unfurl into a neutral expression.]

It's unfortunate about the girl, but the same can be said for everyone here. As for Akechi, he knows the retribution he'll be receiving. I have no judgment to cast on either.

I spoke with Akechi a few times. Back then, he was skilled at putting up a front.

[Certainly, the slips were there. He cants his head at the mention of loneliness.]

Sad? I suppose that's one way to look at it. But a facade can be put up for a number of reasons.

[For a brief moment, he just stares.]

Speaking from experience?

[Please.]

You should ask, unless you're content with wondering forever. [He doesn't say this unkindly, and is rather pointing out a fact.] The only way to know for sure is by talking directly. Assuming is . . . dangerous.

[At that, he huffs. It's a small, mirthful sound.]

You were so concerned about losing yourself, but it's been two trials and you're still you.

In any case, I advise against getting your hopes up too high. If he's been wearing a mask for so long, he's not likely to give you an answer easily.
